The Baptistery by Alvise Tagliapietra (1708)
One of the masterpieces which embellish the cathedral built by Longhena after the fire which destroyed its predecessor in 1623. The monument was built between 1700 and 1708 and has a font with an unusual pyramidal form. The baptismal font with its marble base has a gilt copper cover with a triangular central relief representing the Baptism of Jesus.
In the top corners of the baptistry are the Virtues who, in their poses, express clear symbolism. Above their is the allegory of Faith represented by a female figure with semi-veiled eyes, signifying the fact that man can not penetrate the mysteries of the divine. To the left Charity is represented by a mother affectionately holding her children, whilst to the left Hope stands with her feet firm upon an anchor.
The composition with its origins in religious concepts is enriched with baroque floral elements and is one of the most admired pieces in the cathedral.
