The canvas The miracles of Saint Nicholas Bishop of Myra by Andrea Vicentino (1618-19)
Hanging with the previous painting and of similar form and dimensions (4.10 x 3.90 m) this work by Andrea Vicentino is as much praiseworthy for its chromatic conception, more tense in its illumination and its attempt at producing an almost dreamlike atmosphere. In this case the the artist takes us outside, into a breathtaking scenographic environment which makes evident the monumental scale of this 'city of the sea' driven by maritime commerce, invoking memories of Bellini and Carpaccio from two centuries prior.
That which unites the two artists, visibly oriented in two different stylistic concepts, is the intended narrative and the ability of pictorial description. In some cases certain experts in Venetian painting of the period have defined this as 'narrative painting', in which a moment in history is brought to life and the emotions transmitted become poetry. In both cases there is no doubting the visual impact.
